A Scan-to-CAD workflow done a little bit differently – using Drone Photogrammetry and 3d modelling to produce work as executed drawings

PROJECT OVERVIEW

After the completion of rockfall barriers in the rail corridor, Work As Executed survey drawings were required to document and record completed the works. The rockfall barrier was located in a difficult to access location and covered a large area. As a result, a traditional As-Built survey using total stations and ground based means would have been un-achievable, or otherwise resulted in incomplete or poorly detailed Works-As-Executed outputs.

The resulting As-Built survey provided robust visualisation for construction verification – completing the construction lifecycle and replacing assumptions with facts.

DIOSPATIAL SOLUTION

Diospatial developed a drone-based solution whereby images were captured and then processed in photogrammetry software to create a 3D model. The 3D model was then used as the basis for feature extraction where key features of the site and rockfall barrier were identified and marked out. Using this, Work As Executed survey drawings were derived and delivered in 2D PDF format.

The resulting outputs included an accurate As-Built survey of the completed works, as well as a 3D model with rich visualisation of the entire site, for construction verification and ongoing record.

This solution enabled rapid capture of As-Constructed features, provided robust visualisation of the site for construction verification and completed the construction lifecycle, ultimately replacing assumptions with facts.
