3D Reality Model of Building for Remote Inspection

High resolution drone-based imaging and photogrammetry derived 3D reality model of warehouse building for remote digital inspection

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Diodrone was commissioned to complete a digital inspection of the roof-top of a Sydney Trains Warehouse as part of routine inspection to identify areas of damage or degraded roofing materials.

Due to the nature of the roof, manual inspections were not able to be completed on foot. Instead, cranes were required which would be timely, costly and require working at heights. Sydney Trains therefore required a drone-based solution that would provide high detail of the roof-top and building façade and enable remote close visual inspection.

DIODRONE SOLUTION

Diodrone CASA and rail certified remote pilots flew a small multirotor drone to capture high resolution images of the exterior of the building.

Capturing 20MP imagery at a high rate of overlap, the images were then processed in photogrammetry software to produce a scale and geo-accurate high resolution 3D reality model.

By capturing images at a high rate of overlap, it produced a scale and geo-accurate high resolution 3D reality model.

With the 3D and high-resolution data set, project stakeholders were able to easily conduct remote visual inspection of the roof-top and building façades. The 3D model was then able to be used for any scoping or planning of remediation works with contractors.

Data capture was completed in 1 day on-site with no people in the danger zone, and enabled access to an inaccessible area.
